Over 18 months, Julian Kingma travelled across Australia documenting the people who choose voluntary assisted dying, alongside the families and health professionals who support them through their final journey.
Through more than 70 intimate portraits and photographic essays, The Power of Choice explores the deeply human experience behind voluntary assisted dying. Julian’s photographs capture moments of hope, struggle, courage, vulnerability and acceptance, giving a face to an intensely personal decision that is often discussed through the lens of politics, medicine and law.
The project offers a compassionate and unflinching look at death, dignity and personal choice, inviting us to consider what it means to have agency at the end of life—and, ultimately, what constitutes a good death.
Featuring forewords by Andrew Denton and Richard Flanagan, The Power of Choice brings together deeply personal stories and images from people across Australia.
