The Hot Chicken Project is a photographic and culinary journey into the history, culture and communities behind one of Nashville’s most iconic foods.
Working alongside acclaimed Australian chef Aaron Turner, Julian Kingma travelled to Nashville to document the people, families and places that have shaped hot chicken across generations. His photography captures much more than the food itself, exploring the characters, traditions and communities behind a dish that has become a cultural phenomenon far beyond Tennessee.
Part cookbook, part travelogue and part visual documentary, The Hot Chicken Project combines Julian’s intimate portraiture and observational photography with Aaron’s personal pilgrimage through Nashville’s hot chicken culture.
Featuring 40 recipes alongside stories and photography, the book is both a celebration of hot chicken and a record of the people who have cooked, shared and protected its traditions—capturing a distinctive food culture at a moment of change.
